Scintilla information from Matts Hallgren in Sweden
To the point, I owned a pair of Scintillas (sold to a friend nearby) , paired with 2x Krell KMA-100 MK2.
I have a pic here that shows the Scintillas hooked up with a "Mission Cyrus one" I did blow a 2.5A fuse, but replaced with a 16A I could get a whisper out of them....(the Krells were serviced at the time)
(BTW that's NOT my listening room !!, it's the "gonna-have-a-party-lock-in-the-Scintillas room) The thing on top of the Pioneer PD-75 is an "NLE 11/12" buffer/attenuator with hard-wired (is that the correct phrase ?) "Kimber PBJ", it's got an _extremely_ revealing and clean sound (when battery driven). If you've ever connected a CD directly to the amps you know what I mean. (Yes I do) The speaker cables are Audioquest midnight blue.
Actually I used the Cyrus for several weeks (and it's still working), I put a thermometer on top of it to see if it should melt or something. This was several years ago (about -94 -95) but I recall seeing 60-70 degrees (Celsius as I live in Sweden) as an average.... (oh and at the back of it it says "MIN SPEAKER RESISTANCE 4 OHMS !!", but we know better =)
The friend that bought them is using a "Dynamic Precision NO 1" (see bottom of page) , it gets hot but is fan-cooled and have protection against clipping (VERY useful) and overheating. It's supposed to be a fully balanced 2*250w class A amp (2*970w at 2 ohms), but the Krells (100w) "feels" more powerful.
Tweeter flapping occurs when the amp is putting out DC (or when it's beginning to clip), at least I THINK so 'cause it always happens at the end of Mike Oldfield's "Amarok" =).
This happened with all amps I've tried them with, except a couple of "Krell MDA-500"'s I tried of course....... (the monaural version of KSA-250 = hot living room)
The fella I bought them from had tried a more expensive Mark Levinson (no. 31 ??), but he could not afford a second try =). He was also the one with the MDA-500's. We did a direct comparison KMA-100mkII vs MDA-500, and it sounded exactly as you would think. The MDA's had firmer bass (with 5 times the output they should), but lost out in musicality.
Dynamic precision amps
It's a Norwegian hi-end brand, more known for their later series ,PA-5000 and
6000, which are true beasts weighing in at approx 90 kg !! (and more Krell like in
price...) The No1 is their first design (go figure !), and about the size of an KSA-250, 45kgs.
Compared to the Krells (KMA-100's) it lacks just about everything, but not much
of it (if you know what I mean) it's good, but not a Krell (and for a third of the price it
shouldn't be).
I guess it dates to about late '80 early '90.
Oh BTW, you can add the Adcom GFA-555 Mk2's to the "won't break when tested" list =)
It got "burn you're fingertip to a crisp" hot, but endured an afternoon of testing !! And you could actually play pretty loud before it clipped. I guess you can thank the mosfets for that.
There's no way I can recommend any other amp's but krells for the Scintillas. But it seems like quite a bunch at least wont break when you try them.
